Basler Theater 1968/9, 1968
A hard-to-find Armin Hofmann poster created for the tumultuous 1968/9 season at the Basel State Theater. The poster shows a large red letter "T" for Theater, with a fiery rift breaking up its form into two parts. Upon close inspection, the viewer realizes that the separating section is a slightly 'hotter' red tone. Hofmann's electrifying design was inspired by the passions and debates within the theater company itself and its audience in the divisive times of the late Sixties. The younger generation particularly wanted more avant-garde productions to reflect the changing times. It should be noted that this poster referenced his black letter T poster from two season's earlier, which also took the mood of the Sixties as its departure. They make an excellent pair!
