Teatro Lirico - Jacinto Benavente - La Comida de la Fieras, 1898
Utrillo's 2-sheet Symbolist poster for Spain's Lyric Theatre is one of the supreme expressions of Spanish Art Nouveau. Elegantly attired theatre-goers meet in the entrance way, under the swooping wings of a firebird. The focus is clearly on the flowing robes of the two lady friends, with the gentleman shown in shadow. In the soft distance can be seen the orchestra conductor. Utrillo was a leading artist of Modernisme, the Spanish name for Art Nouveau. A world traveler, he easily absorbed the lessons of the Symbolists as well as the innovations of Alphonse Mucha and French Art Nouveau. A true Renaissance man, he published several literary magazines and was an accomplished archaeologist, engineer, and historian. In addition to these achievements, he is also famous for being the adopted father of Maurice Utrillo, the great Montmartre painter.
