Bowler hat and cane on chair; YELLOW, GREEN, BLACK

Marca Zenit/G.B. Borsalino, 1911
Marca Zenit was the manufacturer of the famous Borsalino top hat, known as the king of hats in Italy. The poster is one of the rarest and most sought-after of all Italian posters and a masterpiece by Dudovich at the height of his powers. As a protégé of Metlicovitz, Dudovich rapidly developed into the leading poster artist in Italy, eliminating many Art Nouveau flourishes for a more modern style. Between 1907 and 1914, he achieved a richness and monumentality scarcely achieved before or since in poster art.   This remarkable poster shows a pair of gloves, a Borsalino bowler hat, and a cane – the outer garments of an Italian gentleman – laid out on an elegant chair. The luminous yellow warmth of the room is stunning (indeed, unique in poster art), and the setting suggests a woman's sitting or bedroom. Dudovich's arrangement subtly but provocatively hints at the nature of the gentleman's visit! Printed on two sheets with very fresh color.
