Join the United States School Garden Army - Enlist Now, 1918 ca..
World War I in the U.S. was a highly patriotic war, characterized by a remarkable spirit of volunteerism and commitment by all strata of society. Edward Penfield, the pioneering illustrator for Harpers Magazine, was one of more than 300 artists who volunteered more than 2,500 poster designs for the war effort.
Penfield's poster for the War Garden Commission, itself a remarkable volunteer effort, is one of the best of World War I, filled with naïve charm and quiet purpose. Roughly 5 million war gardens fed United States citizens while committing massive shipments to aid its beleaguered allies in Europe.
