Loterie Nationale (preparatory painting), 1925 ca.
Leonetto Cappiello was the unrivalled master of the modern product poster. For 50 years beginning in 1900, he created more than 500 masterpieces that lived up to his dictum "Surprise is the essence of modern advertising."
It is difficult to find preparatory paintings of his work, especially fully executed ones. This design for an Italian national lottery is one of the most beautiful. It shows the blind goddess of Luck balancing precariously on the wheel of fortune amid a flurry of playing cards. A pity that the client apparently did not commission a poster of this exuberant image.
