Elvire, 1956
Domergue became famous as a fashion illustrator and designer in Paris as a young man in the 1910s and 1920s. He was the cousin of Toulouse-Lautrec and took some of his first lessons from his renowned uncle. Early on he created design illustrations for La Gazette du Bon Ton and designed dresses for Poiret. A friend of Degas, he loved the world of dance and performers. Domergue claimed that he invented the pin-up girl in a 1912 poster. The Domergue archives comment that Domergue “creates a new form of woman: slender, slim, lithe, with a swanlike bosom and a nonchalant face whose wide eyes look upon the world with desire perched on an elongated neck.” He would go on to create more than 3000 portraits of women. This hand stencilled print was created in 1956 for La Parisienne when he was in his 60s. He clearly had not lost his love for life! Signed in the plate and numbered XVII/XXV in pencil at lower right.
